To celebrate National Engineers Week, we’re shining the spotlight on some of our engineers here at MartinFed! Continuing our highlights is Jenni Deylius, a Lead Payload Planning Manager.
We asked Jenni a few questions about her career in engineering, challenges she’s faced, and what she likes most about working at MartinFed.
What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?
“My first duty station after joining the Air Force was at Vandenberg Air Force Base. I worked as a medic and supported search and rescue during space vehicle launches. After witnessing my first Titan rocket launch I knew I wanted to work in Space Operations. I switched my major and a few years later I was operating weather satellites for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).”
What engineering challenge are you most proud to have accomplished in your career?
“My current role as a Lead Payload Planning Manager for the International Space Station is very dynamic. I get to work closely with our International Partners, Payload Developers and Astronauts to plan and execute on-orbit science experiments, but planning every minute of every day of station life is challenging, because plans always change. It’s like playing Tetris, but sometimes the game hands you a round or triangle shaped piece – it doesn’t work, but you still have to make it work.”
What do you like about being an engineer with MartinFed?
“MartinFed has given me the support and flexibility to explore my strengths as an engineer. They foster a growth mindset which has allowed me to leverage my experience in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise considered.”
